The Dark Crusader serves a deeper purpose than most villains. There is a deep calling within the Dark Crusader, a message from the Old Ones. The sleeping mad Gods wish to be awakened and set loose upon the Multiverse again. The dark Order was so close to freeing them but weakness in the hearts of lesser villains betrayed the mission and the Old Ones were denied. The Dark crusader has had to lie in wait for years working within the Theocracy to bide the time until those who can complete the ritual can be found. The most powerful villains in the Multiverse will be at the Occularium and some of them swore oaths to the Old Ones years past. The Dark Crusader plans to remind them of these oaths and begin the work again of bringing about the rise of the Old Ones.
The Dark Crusader is the last remnant of the old Dark Order. Serving within the perfect hiding place as a mid-level church administrator in the House of Rods the Dark Crusader has bided their time until a large gathering of powerful individuals brought all the oath takers in one place and the Occularium is that gathering.
